"Using a climate model of the Institute of Numerical Mathematics (INM) of RAS in the preparation of the 5th IPCC Assessment Report" (Newsletter # 19, October 2010) Print

E.М.VolodinA preparation of the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is to be finished by 2013-2014, The IPCC was established by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1988. The main objective of the IPCC is to issue assessments of knowledge on Climate Change at regular intervals. The IPCC prepares special reports and technical papers on the issues which require independent scientific information and advice. It supports the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) through its work on methodologies for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories as well. The main tools for the study of observed and projected climate change now are global numerical models of the general circulation of the atmosphere and ocean. Among the top 23 models in the world, selected for the preparation of the IPCC 5AR (combined in a CMIP5 project), there is the only Russian model - a joint climate model of the atmosphere and ocean by the Institute of Numerical Mathematics (INM of RAS). The lead researcher of the INM of RAS Dr. E.M.Volodin was interviewed on the issue by a correspondent of the Climate Change bulletin.
